How to Check Information You Find Online
Before sharing a post, a quick look at its source and date can provide useful context.
When a post has a striking headline, it can be tempting to accept it at face value and pass it along. A few quick checks can help put the claim in context.
Look for the original source and check when the information was published. Read beyond the headline, inspect any linked documents, and compare coverage from independent, reliable sources. A copied quote may leave out details that change its meaning.
Images need context as well. An old photograph can be shared as if it shows a new event. If you cannot confirm a claim, it is better not to present it as certain. A little pause can make online conversations more accurate and useful.
